Omega-3s are a family of essential fatty acids that play an important role in your body and can provide you with a number of health benefits (See reference 1 & reference 2).
The three most important types of omega-3s are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). ALA is mainly found in plants, while DHA and EPA are mainly found in foods of animal origin and algae.
Since your body cannot produce them on its own, you must obtain them from food. Common foods high in omega-3 fatty acids include fatty fish, fish oils, flaxseeds, chia seeds, flaxseed oil, and walnuts.
For people who don't eat a lot of these foods, an omega-3 supplement, such as fish oil or algal oil, is often recommended. 90% of young adults (between 18 and 34 years old) are deficient in omega-3 EPA and DHA.
A wealth of research demonstrates the positive effects of having an optimized omega-3/omega-6 ratio in your diet and your body. We invite you to look at the numerous scientific data found on the scientific reference site Pubmed (ex: reference 3)
